Frequently Asked Questions

Q. HOW DOES POOLRX WORK?

A. Inside the PoolRx unit, which you install in the pump basket in your pool, there is metal rod with Silver, Copper and Zinc in a special configurement, which creates a unique and patented mineral formula. When in contact with water, the minerals dissolve out of the PoolRx unit and circulate through your pool, breaking down your pools algae and bacteria. Once spent, the minerals then regain their ionic charge as water repasses through the PoolRx unit that is in your pump basket. The mineral combination of PoolRx forms a stable natural mineral content in the water, which kills algae and bacteria and viruses but is completely safe for humans.

Q. DOES POOLRx ALWAYS WORK?

A. Yes.  When we get the occasional calls that PoolRx is “not working,” what we find is one of five things.

1) The pump motor is not working properly …

2) The filter is clogged …

3) The pool volume/size has not been calculated correctly; hence not enough PoolRx units have been used.

4) You have not replaced your PoolRx minerals in a timely manner.

5) The pool maintenance man has taken the main PoolRx unit out of the pool basket; mistakenly thinking it is “spent” as the core has hollowed out.  Again, until the one-year mark do not take it out of the basket. It is still effective and working with the minerals that have dissolved in your pool.

Q. YOU SAY THE POOLRx SYSTEM ALWAYS WORKS? IS THAT WHY YOU OFFER A MONEY BACK GUARANTEE?

A. Yes, we know from years of success that PoolRx works and why we are willing to offer you a money back guarantee. We have a 99.9% retention of customers once they start using it.

Q. HOW DO WE “INSTALL” POOLRx IN THE PUMP BASKET OF THE POOL?

A. You first turn off the pool pump.  Then, you take the PoolRx unit(s) out of the package and put it in the pump basket of your pool. And then you turn the pool pump back on.

The number of liters of water in the pool will determine how many PoolRx units/boosters you need to put in the pump basket.

Q. CAN I TAKE THE POOLRx UNIT OUT OF THE PUMP BASKET ONCE THE MINERALS HAVE DISSOLVED OUT OF THE MIDDLE OF THE ROD?

A.  No, the unit must stay in as the minerals are rejuvenated when passing back over the rod.  The PoolRx unit only needs to be replaced once a year.

Q. BUT THE POOLRx UNIT IS SO SMALL TO DO ALL THAT YOU SAY IT WILL?

A. It is, isn’t it? But size isn’t everything.

Q. CAN YOU COMPARE CHLORINE VERSUS POOLRx IN KILLING BACTERIA?

A. What takes chlorine 15 minutes to eliminate, like ecoli bacteria, PoolRx can kill these same bacteria in 15 seconds. PoolRx is over 1000 times more effective in killing bacteria than chlorine.

Q. CAN I USE POOLRx IN A SALT POOL?

A.  Absolutely.  In fact, no salt pool should be without one.  Most people who install a salt system think they are not swimming in high levels of chlorine.  All a salt pool has done is to change the application of the chlorine but not solved the real problem, which is reducing the level of chlorine you are swimming in.

PoolRx is the only copper based algaecide that you can use in a salt pool.  Salt pools generate large amounts of sodium chloride (liquid chlorine) in your pool in the range of 3 to 5 parts per million. To keep the chlorine in check, you are then forced to constantly add muriatic acid to keep your PH balance in line.  In addition, algae are resilient to chlorine so salt pools alone do not necessarily eliminate the algae.

Also, salt cells need to be replaced every two years, at a price range of $600 to $800.  PoolRx solves these problems in the following ways:

It reduces the amount of chlorine the system needs to make by up to 75%.  This will, in turn, reduce the amount of acid needed to reduce the PH.  This will allow the salt cell to last twice as long and less scale will build up on the tiles.

If you have a salt pool, you don’t use chlorine, but you are forced to use large amount of muriatic acid to bring down the PH level.  Not only is muriatic acid extremely unhealthy, it also costs twice as much as the chlorine it has replaced.

Q. HOW MUCH POOLRx DO YOU NEED?

A. You will need one PoolRx unit for every 80,000 liters of water in your pool.  i.e. One PoolRx unit for a pool with 80,000 liters, and two PoolRx units for a pool of 160,000 liters.  In addition, if you have an in-between size (i.e. 120,000 liter pool), you will install one unit and one PoolRx booster.  As another example, if your pool were 200,000 liters, you would install two PoolRx Units plus one PoolRx booster.  We have prepared a chart for you to make this simple to understand. One chart shows you how many liters of water you have based on your pool size. The second chart shows you have many total PoolRx units and boosters you will need based on your pool size.

You should note that most home pools are less than 80,000 liters, requiring just one PoolRx unit.

Q. HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE POOLRx UNIT IN YOUR PUMP BASKET?

A, You will put in your main PoolRx unit(s) once a year, and then you will put PoolRx mineral boosters in the pool water every four to six months. At the end of twelve months you will replace the main PoolRx unit(s) in your pool filter basket with a new one, but you do not take it out before then.

Q. WHY DO WE NEED TO USE A POOLRx BOOSTER EVERY FOUR TO SIX MONTHS?

A, Over time the minerals from the main PoolRx unit are lost through the elimination of contaminants in the pool (meaning: doing their job killing algae and bacteria), backwash, and splash out and need to be replaced, which is usually every four to six months. Every four to six months you simply put the PoolRx mineral booster pack directly in the pool, which will continue to work with the main PoolRx unit in your pool filter basket. And you only need to replace your main pool unit(s) once a year.  It’s very simple.

Q. HOW DO WE DETERMINE WHEN WE NEED TO PUT THE POOLRx BOOSTER IN?

A. If you see any algae reforming, put in the booster pack.  If you change the pool water, put in a new booster pack.  If you have extreme water loss, put in a new booster pack. But normally a booster won’t be needed for four to six months unless the pool has had a lot of extreme usage or extreme splash out.

Q. HOW MANY POOLRx BOOSTER UNITS DO I NEED TO PUT IN THE POOL EVERY FOUR TO SIX MONTHS?

A. You should put in one PoolRx booster for the first 80,000 liters, and then one additional pool RX booster for the next 80,000 liters and every 80,000 liters above this. If your pool held 81,000 liters, you’d install two boosters, and as another example, if your pool held 170,000 liters you’d install three units.

See booster chart.

Q. WHY DO WE NEED TO STILL USE CHLORINE IF POOLRx IS SO EFFECTIVE?

A, Prior to using PoolRx, you probably used large amounts of chlorine and acids as your way to kill bacteria such as algae. But when you use PoolRx, it effectively kills all algae and other bacteria that you were using heavy doses of chlorine to get rid of before. However, there are some contaminants that make the pool cloudy, such as suntan oil, leaves, etc. which chlorine is effective for.

But as PoolRx is so effective, you are able to substantially lower the amount of chlorine needed, typically up to 75%.  While you previously may have maintained a level of chlorine of 3.0 PPM (parts per million), you can now reduce the amount of chlorine you need to .5ppm to 1.0 PPM, a substantial reduction. This is less chlorine than is found in drinking water.

Q. SAY THAT AGAIN. HOW LITTLE CHLORINE DO I NEED IN MY POOL ONCE POOLRx HAS BEEN INSTALLED?

A, While your previous chlorine level was 2.5 to 3.0 PPM (parts per million) prior to installing PoolRx, once you have installed it you can reduce your chlorine level to .5 to 1.0 PPM (that’s less than in drinking water).

Q. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE WE NEED TO DO WHEN WE INSTALL POOLRx FOR THE FIRST TIME?

A. Before installing PoolRx, it is important to start with a clean filter. Then, before installing PoolRx, turn off your pool pump, and then place the PoolRx unit(s) in the pump basket.  Turn on the pump, and walk away.  You’re done!

Q. MY CHLORINE LEVELS SEEM TOO HIGH. CAN I STILL INSTALL THE POOLRx SYSTEM OR DO I HAVE TO WAIT?

A. Yes, you can install the PoolRx system. The PoolRx minerals are heavily sequestered (isolated) with a patented formula to eliminate staining. If your chlorine levels are high, do not add any chlorine until your chlorine levels drop to below one part per million. But having a high chlorine level is a waste of chlorine and is not healthy. Oftentimes pool service companies, out of habit, still use too much chlorine and it takes awhile before they realize they no longer need to. With PoolRx, a smaller dose of chlorine does a far more effective job than a heavy dose of chlorine.

Q. IS POOLRx FOR TROUBLED POOLS OR ALL POOLS?

A, PoolRx is for all pools.  If you have a troubled Pool, PoolRx will usually bring you great results within 24 to 48 hours.  If you have a healthy pool, your pool will stay healthy and you will use substantially less chlorine, have a more eco friendly pool, save on time and maintenance, and you know that your pool will always be clear and sparkly. The product is win-win….better for your pool, your pocketbook, your health, and the environment. And your pool will look better than it ever has before.

Prior to PoolRx, you had to put large amounts of unhealthy chemicals in your pool to maintain it.  You had no choice. Now, you have a choice.

Q. YOU SAY THAT WE DON’T HAVE TO RUN OUR PUMP AS MUCH. WHY?

A. No, you don’t have to run your pump as much.  PoolRx is so effective that it does not need to work as hard to keep your pool clean and sparking.  Most homeowners and hotel operators reduce their pool pump time up to 40%, a substantial savings in electricity costs.

Part of the reason you don’t have to run your pool pump as much is because the minerals do not “gas off” like chlorine.  The PoolRx minerals stay in the water, eliminating algae and bacteria, even if the pump is not running.

Q. HOW MUCH TIME DO WE NEED TO RUN OUR PUMP WHEN POOLRx IS INSTALLED?

A. Every pool is different, but we recommend running your pump six to eight hours a day when PoolRx is installed, and during the sunniest parts of the day.  The rule of thumb is that the water in your pool needs to turn over one and a half times per day when PoolRx is installed.

Q. DO WE STILL HAVE TO BACKWASH OUR POOL AS MUCH AFTER WE HAVE INSTALLED POOLRx?

A. No. We have found that after installing PoolRx, you only need to backwash half as much as you did previously.

Q. HOW SOON CAN WE GO BACK IN THE POOL AFTER INSTALLING POOLRx?

A. Immediately.  The minerals it generates are human and pet friendly.

Q. HOW DOES THE POOLRx FAMILY OF PRODUCT SAVE MONEY?

A. With PoolRx you need less of everything.  You can reduce your chemical reduce usage by up to 75%.  You didn’t have this choice until now. In fact, your pool will now be better sanitized even with a 75% reduction in chemicals!

You need less time to run your pump, substantially saving electrical costs.

You need less maintenance time spent on your pool as PoolRx keeps your pool clear and sparkling with less effort.

The pool water will be stay more balanced because of using less chemicals.

And there is less handling of toxic chemicals, as you need less chlorine and acid.

Q. CAN ALL POOLS USE POOLRx?

A, The only pools that can’t use PoolRx are Bromine pools and Biguainde pools, which are very rare.   Other than that, all pools can use PoolRx, although if you have a pool with an Ionizer you should turn it off and add a “sequestering agent” to isolate the copper ions that the ionizer has produced.

Q. CAN I USE POOLRx IF I HAVE AN IONIZER?

A.  We know that you may have spent a good deal of money installing an Ionizer, but you will be throwing good money after bad if you keep your Ionizer running.  PoolRx is much more effective than an Ionizer at keeping your pool in great shape, at far less cost.

If you have the Ionizer and want to install PoolRX, you should test the water for copper content, and if it is over .5 parts per million (PPM) the pool should be drained to avoid your pool staining, as it will stain if your copper is at that level.  Once refilled, you can install PoolRx in your pump basket.

If the copper content is below .5 PPM, you can add a sequestering agent, and then install Pool  RX without having to drain your pool.

Q. WHY AREN’T IONIZERS A GOOD CHOICE?

A. Ionizers are old technology and stain pools. The reason they stain pools is that every time your pump comes on, it puts more and more raw copper ions into your water, which when a slight fluctuation in PH occurs, stains your pool.

Q. WHY IS POOLRx DIFFERENT THAN AN IONIZER?

A. POOLRx puts a measured amount of copper minerals in the water with a patented isolation agent to eliminate fallout of copper onto your pool surface. It does not stain. With PoolRx, there are not “more” copper ions going in every day, but less, as you lose minerals to your backwash and splash out.

Q. IS POOLRx AS EFFECTIVE AS AN IONIZER?

A. Yes. It’s more effective than an Ionizer as we have a unique patented formula of copper, silver and zinc ions and a specially treated alloy that allows the minerals to gain their ionic charge without adding more and more minerals on a daily basis.

Q. WHAT IS A SEQUESTERING AGENT?

A.  A Sequestering agent is PoolRx stain control, which comes in a quart bottle.  A sequestering agent isolates the metals that could cause staining in your pool.

Q. SO IF WE BUY POOLRx, CAN WE INSTALL IT IN OUR POOL IMMEDIATELY?

A, In 99.5% of pools you can put it in immediately and quickly see the difference. The only exception is that if a pool is “saturated,” or if it is already too laden with copper from an Ionizer.  In that case, you may need to drain your pool prior to putting in PoolRx or drain it halfway.  But this is rarely the case as very few pools are saturated. If you did put it in a pool that was already saturated, there is no danger, but the PoolRx simply won’t be effective.

Q. IF A POOL IS “SATURATED,” WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

A. When we say saturated, imagine a bathtub that you filled two months ago and never drained, holding both bath water and gallons of chemicals that you dumped in over those two months. You’d say that bathtub was “saturated.”  If that’s the case, better to drain the tub and refill it than get into it.  The same is true of your pool.

But most pools aren’t saturated, and especially in the tropics where rains replenishes the old pool water.  If your pool is saturated, even with the cost of replacing the pool water, or half of the water, you will still recover those costs from chemical savings, typically within a month and you will instantly notice the difference in the quality of the water you are swimming in.

Q. MY POOL COMPANY IS RELUCTANT TO USE POOLRx. WHY?

A. It may be that your pool company is not familiar with the product as it is just being introduced in Asia and it is new cutting edge technology.

But there can be another reason, which is that most of the money made in the pool business, (typically over 50%), is made from the sale of chemicals (i.e. chlorine).  PoolRx substantially reduces the amount of chemicals needed; hence there is less profit to be made by many pool supply companies.

Q. IS THE PRODUCT REALLY SAFE?

A. Yes, the minerals meet drinking water standards, but are still completely effective in eliminating algae and bacteria.

Furthermore, the product has passed years of stringent United States EPA  (Environmental Protection Agency) requirements for eliminating algae and bacteria. Our US EPA registration number is 79817-2.

Swimming in a pool with substantially less chlorine is healthier, safer, and makes for a better swimming environment for everyone.  And it’s eco friendly.

Many people get sick on vacations and people often attribute it to something they ate.  Oftentimes, it’s because of unhealthy pool water, and PoolRx helps alleviate that problem.

Q. SO WITH LESS CHLORINE, THAT MEANS OUR BATHING SUITS WON’T FADE AND OUR EYES WON’T STING?

A. Yes.

Q. YOU SAY THAT THE USING POOLRx MAKES THE POOL CLEARER THAN USING CHLORINE. HOW?

A, The minerals in PoolRx are a thousand times more effective than chlorine in killing algae and bacteria.  This changes chlorines job from a primary sanitizer to a secondary sanitizer. This means that it does not have to work as hard in sanitizing the pool, thus allowing it to do it’s real job, which is to clarify the water.

People tell us all the time that they can’t believe the water clarity of a pool using PoolRx.

Q. I’M NOT A POOL MAN BUT I AM CURIOUS HOW TO CHECK THE CHLORINE LEVELS IN MY POOL. IS THIS EASY?

A. If you want, we can sell you simple test strips that you simply put in the water and get a quick reading in your pool without having to use test tubes, etc.  It only takes two minutes.  This way you can check to see if your pool maintenance person is putting in more chlorine than needed.

Q. IF I INSTALL POOLRx, WILL I STILL NEED AN ALGAECIDE?

A. No. If you have installed PoolRx, you do not need any other algaecide. If you do get Algae after using PoolRx this is caused by lack of proper filtration/circulation, or incorrect volume calculation of your pool size.

Q. CAN I USE A “METAL OUT” OR STAIN CONTROL PRODUCT IF I HAVE POOLRx INSTALLED?

A. Yes. This will not adversely affect the performance of the PoolRx minerals. In fact we recommend using the PoolRx Stain Control as a quarterly program. You do not know what outside elements may get into the water supply that you fill your pool with.

Q. I HAVE CLOUDY WATER. WHY?

A. Cloudy water is caused by a couple of things: lack of available chlorine or poor filtration/circulation. The PoolRx minerals do not eliminate contaminants and organics like tanning oil and tree leaves, etc. which make the water cloudy. This is the chlorines role.

For chlorine optimization, we recommend a  PoolRx Tri-Chlor tab feeder to be installed inline which allows you to regulate a small amount of chlorine being added to the water on a continual basis while the pump is running.

Q. YOU SAY THAT CHLORINE IS MOST EFFECTIVE WHEN IT IS FED BY A FEEDER. WHAT IS A FEEDER?

A. A feeder is either a device that floats on top of the pool with chlorine tablets or a device in your poolroom piping that feeds chlorine directly into the pool line in a measured dose.  The most effective device is an inline tab feeder whether in a home or a hotel.

Q. SO YOU SAY WE SHOULD USE CHLORINE TABS VERSUS LIQUID CHLORINE. WHY?

A. You absolutely should use chlorine tabs if possible.  When you pour liquid chlorine into your pool, it is only 15% active, and tablet chlorine is 93% active.

Furthermore, with liquid chlorine, its PH is 13, which means you have to add muriatic acid to bring the level down to the right ranges for the chlorine to be effective.  You don’t need to do this with the tabs, as the tabs PH are 3.

Pool Chemistry PH tends to want to rise, and by putting in a chlorine that has a low PH (the tabs) it will balance this out.

Q. OUR PLASTER IS BLUING. WHAT IS THIS CAUSED BY?

A. This is caused by bad pool chemistry; this tends to be by high calcium levels with high metal content brought in from your pools water source.

High calcium level will start precipitating (caking) onto your pools surface. This in turn attracts the PoolRx minerals like a magnet onto these calcified areas. If your pool chemistry is correct this will not happen. Fortunately, this is not an oxidized stain  (permanent stain) and can be removed by lowering the calcium levels and removing the calcification areas of your pool surface by adding the PoolRx stain control

Q. HOW DO I TEST FOR POOLRx MINERALS?

A. Unfortunately no test kit is available that gives a true and accurate reading. The reason for this is that all the minerals in the PoolRX product are heavily isolated (chelated) to eliminate problems associated with metals and staining.

Q. MY CHLORINE TEST KIT SAYS “ADD CHLORINE?”

A. Chlorine test kits are there to sell more chlorine.  With PoolRx installed, simply keep a 0.5 to 1.0ppm reading, and keep your pH and Alkalinity in the right ranges.  With PoolRx, pool chemistry balance will not need as much adjustment to keep in the proper ranges.

Q. HOW LONG IS THE LIFE SPAN OF THE POOLRx UNIT?

A. Over the years of extensive testing, we have found that to receive the optimum performance from the PoolRx system you should replace the main unit(s) in your pool basket every 12 months as it/they get calcified over time and become less effective. Once you replace your main PoolRx unit, you will not need PoolRx boosters for another four to six months.

Q. IF WE WANTED TO, COULD WE REPLACE THE MAIN POOLRx UNIT MORE THAN ONCE A YEAR? WOULD IT HURT ANYTHING?

A. Well, you certainly could, but we do not think you need to, and certainly never more than twice a year.  In all of our testing and in all of our pools, putting in boosters between the yearly change out of the main PoolRx unit is all you need.

We understand that when some people wait for an elevator some people like to press the button more than once so if you really wanted to replace your unit before twelve months is up, go ahead but you would only do this in lieu of putting in the boosters. But there is really no need to do this as long as you are using the boosters.

Q. DO I NEED TO USE OTHER CHEMICALS IF I USE POOLRx.

A.  Yes, you will still need a small amount of chlorine to keep your chlorine level to .5ppm to 1.0ppm.  And in addition, you will need soda ash and acid to balance ph and alkalinity, on an as needed basis.

If you use the Tri-Chlor tablets we recommend, they already have chlorine, acid and conditioner in them, simplifying your pool chemistry. Each tablet has 90% active chlorine, acid (PH around 2.8 to 3.0PPM), and conditioner/stabilizer (this stabilizes and holds the chlorine in your pool.

As we have said, if you use PoolRx you will be reducing your overall chemical usage by up to 75%

Q. CAN WE USE THIS IN OUR FOUNTAINS AND WATER FEATURES?

A. Absolutely.  Most water features and ponds are laden with algae and other bacteria.  Fountain RX will help eliminate this providing the pond or water feature has good circulation and filtration.

Q. CAN WE USE THIS IN OUR FOUNTAINS AND WATER FEATURES?

A. Absolutely.  Most water features and ponds are laden with algae and other bacteria.  Fountain RX will help eliminate this providing the pond or water feature has good circulation and filtration.

Q. CAN I USE POOLRx IN MY FISH POND?

A. No, while PoolRx is 100% safe for humans, fish breathe through their gills.  The same amount of minerals that is safe for humans and all mammals reacts differently in fish due to their gills.  However, we do have an ozone generating system that will help alleviate the algae in your fishpond without harming the fish.

Q. IF POOLRx IS SO GOOD, HOW COME I HAVEN’T HEARD ABOUT IT BEFORE?

A. We have only introduced PoolRx outside of the United States this past summer.  It’s already been used in over 50,000 pools and resorts in the United States for more than ten years.

Q. CAN I ARRANGE TO HAVE A YEARLY MAINTENANCE PROGRAM OF POOLRx SHIPPED TO ME AUTOMATICALLY?

A. Yes, we can arrange that.  Whether you are a homeowner or a hotel, we can work out a yearly program for you so you never run short.  Most people find it more convenient.
